Just outside of the bayside town of Bar Harbor, Maine, is Acadia National Park. Notable are the Carriage Roads and Stone Arch Bridges which were financed and directed by philanthropist John D. Rockefeller, Jr. between 1913 and 1940. They were primarily designed for travel by horse and buggy, his passion. The network includes 57 miles of crushed granite roads, mostly free of motor vehicles, and 17 Stone Arch Bridges. Entrance is limited to 2 gatehouses where the seasonal attendants reside. His love of road building and his massive wealth insured a state of art road system. It is best to see the roads and surrounding forest slowly by horse-drawn carriage. In 1945 Rockefeller donated 11,000 acres and his maze of roads and bridges to the National Park Service. Standing on Mount Desert Island is always chilly from the breeze off the north Atlantic.
