The vocalizations of the loon are often refered to as the "call of the north". These large water birds migrate back to their birth place after several years maturing in salt water. They are graceful diving birds that are specialist fish-eaters, catching their prey underwater, diving as deep as 200 feet and remaining underwater for as long as three minutes. Both the male and female raise the newly hatched birds and fiercely defend themselves against eagles and osprey.
